SUPER STARS - Advantages
Designed for pre-adolescent youth (aged 6-11) ~ the program communicates effectively with this age group. Study has reveal that children in this age group are highly susceptible to peer pressure.
Fun thru various artistic mediums ~ the program is fun for both youth and adult participants. It uses a number of activity oriented approaches such as dancing, story-telling, role-plays, music, action games, coloring books and puppetry.
Involves both parent/guardian and child ~ which helps strengthen the importance of our message at home.
Effective for single parent families ~ who may otherwise struggle to find the time and information necessary to provide their child about prevention and awareness.
Award Winning Methods
SUPER STARS uses a protective factor approach, a framework that has assumed a prominent position in substance abuse prevention. The protective factor approach focuses on the positive assets of individuals and assumes that enhancing these competencies can help prevent substance abuse. Strengthening family bonds and functioning, as well as encouraging a sense of racial and cultural pride as SUPER STARS does - have been shown to reduce the probability of substance abuse.
Post-program Evaluations
Independent evaluations by Georgia State University indicated SUPER STARS have benefited both parents and youth that participated in the program. Surveys results show:
- significant increases in family communication, stress and anger management.
- family closeness.
- personal well being among adults.
- youths reported more positive feelings about themselves and their family.
- increase in willingness to discuss problems with their parents.
