Underage drinking cost the citizens of The United States $68.0 billion in 2007. These costs include medical care, work loss, and pain and suffering associated with the multiple problems resulting from the use of alcohol by youth. Town Hall Meetings (THMs) to prevent underage drinking are now being organized in communities across the country. Many of these THMs will focus on the risks faced by children in families with substance abuse problems and will present effective prevention strategies to address this and similar issues.

Drug testing and drug free workplace programs are an institution in many workplaces these days.  According to a recent poll by the Institute for a Drug Free Workplace, more than 71% of major U.S. companies regularly test for drugs and alcohol. In a 2005 Gallup poll survey, 37% of respondents said that substance abuse problems at work had increased in the last 5 years.
